IPTV in one sentence
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of TV channels arriving through a coaxial cable or a satellite dish, they arrive as data over the same broadband connection you use for everything else. A small app on your TV, stick, phone or computer turns that data back into a picture.
How it is different from cable, satellite and streaming apps
Cable and satellite need a dedicated line or dish, a set-top box from the provider, and usually a contract. IPTV needs none of that hardware; any device that can run a player app works.
Streaming apps such as on-demand movie services are mostly a library you browse. IPTV works more like traditional TV: you flick through live channels with a TV guide, and most services add a movie and series library and catch-up on top.
The three things you see in an IPTV service
- Live TV. Channels playing in real time, grouped into categories such as sports, news, kids and international.
- Video on demand (VOD). Films and series you start whenever you like, with pause and resume.
- Catch-up. Recently aired shows on supported channels that you can rewind to, typically up to seven days back.
What you need to watch IPTV
- A device. A Firestick, Android TV box, smart TV, phone, tablet, computer or MAG box. Our setup guides cover each one.
- A player app. Either the provider's own app (like the RX IPTV app) or a general player that supports IPTV logins.
- An internet connection. Around 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
- A subscription. This gives you the login details the app needs.
Xtream Codes, M3U and MAG portals: what is the difference?
When you subscribe, you receive login details in one or more of these formats. They all unlock the same channels; they differ in how the app connects.
| Login type | What you enter | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Xtream Codes | Username, password, server URL | Almost every app. Loads fast and brings the TV guide and catch-up automatically. |
| M3U link | One long web address | Simple players such as VLC that do not support Xtream Codes. |
| MAG portal | A portal URL, linked to the box's MAC address | MAG set-top boxes and some Stalker-based apps. |
If an app offers Xtream Codes, use it. It is quicker to type and handles the guide for you.
Is IPTV hard to set up?
For most devices it takes five to ten minutes: install an app, type in your login, and wait for the channel list to load the first time. The only step that confuses people is installing apps from outside the store on a Firestick, which our Firestick guide walks through with pictures of each screen.
What makes one IPTV service better than another?
- Stability at peak times. Anyone can stream smoothly at 3 am. Test during a big live event.
- A working TV guide. Without it, browsing hundreds of channels is painful.
- Real support. You want a person who answers when something stops working, not a ticket that sits for days.
- A paid trial. A short, low-cost trial lets you test on your own internet before committing to a long plan.
